Traditional Land Use Mapping
For many First Nations, the mapping of historical changes in territory boundaries,
and of traditional and cultural sites are desired and necessary components
of resource management planning and land use negotiations with government,
industry and other resource users. Arbex services in land use mapping range
from facilitation of community consultation sessions for location of key sites,
to digitization of sensitive area coverages, creation of accompanying databases
and production of layouts.

Application Development
Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) provide an interactive means for non-technical
users to access, query and display geographic information. GUI Projects,
created using Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) programming
language, Avenue, can be custom designed for our clients target audience
to present information in a series of organized view and layouts. A great
tool for archiving cultural knowledge and for teaching traditional ways to
todays youth in a technologically savvy manner, GUIs capture the interest
of users by including information from diverse sources such as:
-
Digital files
-
Photographic and satellite imagery
-
Video clips
-
Text files and scanned documents
The Algonquins of Barriere Lake (ABL) Traditional Ecological Knowledge Educational
GUI is currently being developed by Arbex to provide community schools with
a tool to teach Algonquin children about their cultural, traditional and natural
heritage within the ABL traditional territory. The project features interactive
modules on Traditional Plants, Fish and Wildlife, Toponymy and Culture, with a view
to the development of additional modules in the future.
